Wuthering Heights (2026)

After watching this film I can picture in my head is the director standing with a megaphone screaming “More!” at everyone involved.

More sex! One sex scene isn’t enough, let’s have four overlapping shags in different locations.

More gothic set design! Move that pile of bottles bigger and lets have another one on the other side. And that prepare cover it with mud and moss.

More weather! Yorkshire is obviously constantly bothered by wind, rain, snow, mists and above all thunderstorms – more lightning!

More words mumbling! It doesn’t matter if we can’t hear what the actors are saying, bring up the violins!

More blood! More costumes! And much more gothic!

This is an easy film to make fun of (as you will have noticed) but in fairness this does take the basic situation and ideas from the novel and does something genuinely new with it, even if it was somewhat over the top.

Certainly the visuals were gripping, the story engaging, although Nelly’s role in the household seemed rather unclear – she takes a more active role than she does in the book, although her motivations in manipulating Cathy are not really explained.

Despite my teasing you should watch this movie – certainly visually it is possibly one of the most gothic things you will ever see but if you want to actually follow the story you will probably need the subtitles on.
