The Weekend

Six lifelong friends meet up for their traditional New Years Eve hike when a storm forces them into a cave for shelter. Trying to retrieve a fallen water bottle one of them uncovers a rucksack full of money. Things rapidly go downhill with much bickering and the revelation that each of them has secrets (good and bad) that they are keeping from each other, and all have problems that the money could help solve.

This is quite a fun read, there are plenty of twists, the characters are real (not necessarily likeable) so we don’t mind too much what happens to them, especially since none of them are being honest with the others.

I did guess the final twist ending, although it was fairly well sign-posted so I can’t claim too much credit for it.

The ending was possibly just a little too neat - the police seemed remarkably uninterested in any deeper investigation into what actually happened and some obvious crimes seem to be ignored.

Overall an enjoyable summer time beach read that spins along nicely, is easy to read and then be tossed aside never to be picked up again.
